Alligator Snapping Turtle - A very large freshwater turtle. Its head changes shape with growth. The tail is very long, epecially in hatchlings. The turtle ranges in size between 50 cm (19.7 in) and 75 cm (29.5 in), and weighs between 50 kg (110 lb) and 100 kg (220 lb). In Florida this turtle is found only in the Gulf river drainages from the Sante Fe and Suwannee rivers northwest through the panhandle. Typically, the Alligator Snapping Turtle chooses deep rivers and canals as its home.
